The story behind
When Mick Jones sat down at the piano after a conversation with producer Gary Lyons, something emerged spontaneously. The notes that came from his fingers shaped a riff that would become the foundation of Cold as Ice. The song, written with Lou Gramm, felt so right that it was recorded at Atlantic Studios in one night. Curiously, as they left the studio, they encountered a blizzard covering New York, and the radio announced it had been the coldest night on record. That coincidence seemed like a good omen for the track.
The lyrics, according to Jones, are inspired by the figure of the "cold-hearted girl," that type of character one might see in an old movie, although he doesn't point to anyone in particular. Perhaps, he confesses, a memory of some school disappointment seeped into the process. The low temperatures in New York at that time may also have contributed to the song's icy atmosphere. The result was a track that, although initially the B-side of some singles from Feels Like the First Time, became one of Foreigner's most recognized songs, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single version is slightly shorter than the album version, but adds subtle wind and string arrangements.
