The story behind
Immersing ourselves in Little Moses, we encounter a piece that distills the essence of the purest folk, as Joan Baez presented it in her early days. The recording, which took place in just four days in a Manhattan hotel, reveals a stripped-down and direct approach. The instrumentation is minimal, centered on Baez's voice and guitar, with the collaboration of Fred Hellerman on some parts. It is interesting to note the absence of more complex arrangements, such as choirs or wind and string instruments, which reinforces the intimacy and rawness of the sound. This choice, beyond the technical limitations of the time, seems to have been a conscious decision to prioritize the narrative and vocal performance.
This track is part of Joan Baez's self-titled debut album, released in 1960 under the Vanguard Records label. Although she had been offered a deal with Columbia, Baez opted for Vanguard, a label that would allow her to maintain greater control over her music. The album, composed mostly of traditional folk songs, proved to be a success, although its peak popularity on the Billboard 200 would not be reached until 1962, partly driven by the impact of her next work, Joan Baez Vol. 2. The duration of Little Moses is 3:31, a length that allows the story and atmosphere to be developed without unnecessary extension.
