The story behind

The story told by "Silver Dagger" is that of a young woman whose mother warns her about men, trying to spare her the pain she herself has experienced. The narrator, in this version, rejects a suitor, following her mother's advice. This American folk ballad, which may have its roots in Great Britain, is also known by other titles such as "Katy Dear" or "Awake, Awake, Ye Drowsy Sleepers". Joan Baez's 1960 recording is a fragment of the complete ballad, and shares a melody with "Katy Dear", although the latter tells a similar story from a man's perspective.

This track is part of Joan Baez's debut album, released in 1960 by Vanguard Records. The recording was made in Manhattan in just four days. The album, which contains thirteen traditional folk songs, features Baez on vocals and guitar, occasionally accompanied by Fred Hellerman, with no added choirs, trumpets, or string instruments. Although the album was well-received, its greatest impact on the Billboard 200 came in 1962, driven by the success of her next work, which reached number 15 and remained on the chart for 140 weeks.
