The story behind
The song *Lágrimas de oro* is a thought-provoking piece, lasting 2 minutes and 58 seconds, and is part of Manu Chao's first solo studio album, titled Clandestino, released in 1998. This album is distinguished by its incorporation of speech fragments, such as one from Subcomandante Marcos, and for being largely recorded by the musician himself in different parts of the world, using a laptop he called "Estudio Clandestino." The album has been recognized on important lists, such as the French Rolling Stone magazine's, which ranked it among the best French rock albums, and it was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2020, it held a place on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Manu Chao, whose full name is José Manuel Arturo Tomás Chao Ortega, was born in Paris, France, in 1961, with Spanish roots. His musical journey began on the streets of Paris and with groups like Hot Pants and Los Carayos, where he experimented with various languages and styles. In 1987, along with his brother Antoine Chao and other friends, he formed Mano Negra, a band that achieved significant impact in Europe and Latin America. After Mano Negra's separation in 1995, Manu Chao began his solo career, maintaining a constant connection with his audience through tours with his band, Radio Bemba. He currently resides in Barcelona. His compositions often address themes such as freedom, life in urban environments, immigration, and social struggles, reflecting his political ideals and his family history, marked by emigration from Spain to France during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
