Lago en el cielo

The last time Gustavo Cerati took the stage was in Caracas, on May 15, 2010. Minutes later, everything changed. That night he closed with Lago en el cielo, a ballad that floats between electric guitars and melodies that seem suspended in the air. It’s not the most rock-heavy track on Ahí vamos, but that’s where its magic lies: a contrast between the harshness of the rest of the album and this intimate, almost ethereal piece. Cerati himself called it the album’s "little pearl," a detail that reveals how this track stood out even among songs as powerful as Crimen. The nearly five-and-a-half-minute recording plays with sound layers that invite you to get lost, as if the sky named in the title were a place only reachable by listening closely.

The video for Lago en el cielo came from an unconventional idea: a fan contest that began in June 2007. Of the 400 participants, Andy Fogwill —a close collaborator of Cerati’s— and the former Soda Stereo member selected 34 works. Paper boats, children’s drawings, and seagulls over the sea intertwine in a sequence the musician assembled on his computer. It wasn’t a standard clip but a collage of perspectives, as if each fragment were a piece of that lake evoked in the title. By then, Ahí vamos had already made it clear Cerati was at his best: the album debuted with sales that certified it platinum in Argentina even before its release, and in Mexico it reached gold. But Lago en el cielo was more than just another single: it became an unexpected closer, a song many kept in their memory long after the album stopped playing on the radio.
