The story behind
La solitudine, according to DoReSol
When Laura Pausini released La solitudine in 1993, she not only introduced her voice to the world but also shared a story that would resonate with many. The lyrics, written by Federico Cavalli and Angelo Valsiglio, with music by Pietro Cremonesi and Angelo Valsiglio, tell of a young man named Marco, separated from his beloved by family decision. The perspective of the girl, expressing the emptiness and pain she feels at this separation, is the heart of the song. Interestingly, Laura herself has commented that the lyrics felt like a reflection of her own life at the time, and she asked to change the original name of the protagonist so she could feel more connected to the story. This personal connection is something that can be felt when performing it.
The impact of La solitudine was immediate. After its presentation at the Sanremo Festival in February 1993, where it won in the new artists category with a significant number of votes, the song became a hit in Italy, reaching the top five on the charts. Shortly after, in May 1993, it was included on her first self-titled album. The success did not stop in Italy; by the end of 1993, the song crossed borders, topping the charts in the Netherlands and Belgium and entering the top five in France. The song’s versatility was demonstrated with versions in Spanish, such as La soledad, and in English, adapted by Tim Rice, further expanding its reach. Over the years, Laura Pausini has revisited La solitudine, creating new interpretations, such as a more emotional live-instrumentation version for her 2001 compilation, and a special recording to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013, which even fused fragments of her Italian, Spanish, and English versions.
