The story behind
In the early morning of March 10, 1966, in Nashville, Tennessee, the final piece for Bob Dylan's seventh studio album, Blonde on Blonde, was recorded. That piece was I Want You. The recording session, which lasted until around seven in the morning, was intense, with several takes until the definitive one was achieved. Producer Bob Johnston oversaw the process, and although the track was registered at Columbia Studio A, it has been noted that there were no subsequent guitar overdubs, despite one of the takes bearing the annotation "insert, guitar overdub". The song's structure, which deviates from the traditional A-A-B-A form by adding a final section, was presented by Dylan to his musicians with an acoustic guitar.
Released as a single in June 1966, I Want You reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 on the UK charts. As the B-side, a live version of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, recorded in Liverpool, was included. Over time, the song has been interpreted in various ways, from a direct expression of desire to a piece with complex symbolism, where some critics have pointed out Dylan's use of particular imagery. It has been a recurring theme in his concerts, with 294 live performances from 1966 to 2005, and was even presented in a "torch song" style during his 1978 tour. The original recording sessions from March 1966 were released in their entirety in 2015 as part of a special edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965–1966.
