The story behind
There's a particular feeling in *Hung Up on a Dream* that grabs you from the very first moment. It's not just the melody, but how it's constructed, almost as if you were unraveling a recurring thought. The song is three minutes long, a span in which the Zombies manage to create an atmosphere that transports you. It's as if the music itself were caught in a loop, inviting you to spin around with it.
This track is part of Odessey and Oracle, an album that had an interesting journey. The recording sessions spanned between June and August 1967, in renowned studios like EMI (now known as Abbey Road Studios) and Olympic Studios, both in London. The Zombies, having left Decca Records, put their own money in to finance these recordings. When the album finally came out, first in the UK under CBS Records on April 19, 1968, and then in the United States with Date Records on July 15, 1968, it didn't make a big initial impact. In fact, the band broke up shortly after. However, time proved that Odessey and Oracle had much more to offer, and songs like *Hung Up on a Dream* are part of that legacy that was discovered and appreciated over the years.
