The story behind

Guilty, according to DoReSol

This version of Guilty is one of those that go unnoticed at first but get stuck in your head. It's not the most famous track on the Labour of Love album, but it has a playful vibe that sets it apart: it blends classic reggae rhythms with a touch of dub, giving it that improvised flavor that defines UB40's sound. The song progresses with a steady bass and drum foundation that repeats like a heartbeat, while the horns and vocals weave together in a melodic game that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's as if it were recorded in a small studio, with that warmth you only get when everyone is playing together without aiming for perfection.

They recorded it in Birmingham, England, in 1983, just as the band was beginning to feel the weight of their first major hit, Red Red Wine. The Labour of Love album was their first covers record, and Guilty is one of those gems that didn’t seek attention but ended up being an essential part of the collection. The track was produced by Ray “Pablo” Falconer alongside the band, and Howard Gray captured that raw yet full-of-life sound. It lasts just three minutes and seventeen seconds, but in that time it conveys the mix of guilt and fun that gives it its name. Though it didn’t reach the top spots in the United States upon its original release, years later, as the success of Red Red Wine spread, Guilty also found its place among the group’s fans.
