The story behind
Georgia, according to DoReSol
The song Georgia by Vance Joy is not just another track from his album Dream Your Life Away: it is a bridge between two eras. The artist borrowed the title and essence of Georgia on My Mind by Ray Charles, but gave it a personal twist by turning it into an intimate tale of love and nostalgia. What’s curious is that the lyrics were not born complete: Joy sketched them in 2006, but left them on hold until, on New Year’s Eve 2014, the riff and melody clicked into place. “It was as if the pieces fell into place on their own,” he later said, and that magical moment was captured in the song’s three minutes and fifty seconds.
The video, directed by Luci Schroder, took the song in an unexpected direction. Instead of showing romantic landscapes or everyday scenes, it opted for a war recreation with soldiers, where emotional tension explodes in a kiss between two combatants. The idea wasn’t just to shock: Joy wanted viewers to pause and reflect. The clip ended up nominated for Best Video at the ARIA Music Awards in 2015, and the song reached number 15 on the Australian Singles Chart. But beyond the numbers, Georgia stands out for how it blends the acoustic with a vintage feel, a detail producer Ryan Hadlock polished during recording sessions between 2013 and 2014.
