The story behind
Mess Is Mine, according to DoReSol
The first time I heard it, Mess Is Mine got me with its sound: a blend of indie pop and indie folk that feels like open air, with a guitar that sways gently yet firmly and a voice that doesn’t ask for permission to stay in your head. It’s not a song that shouts; it sneaks in, like those tracks you end up humming hours later without realizing. The detail that struck me most when listening was its exact length: three minutes and forty-three seconds, not a second more or less, as if every note were calculated to keep the rhythm from overflowing. The video, directed by Luci Schroder, matches that vibe with images shifting from intimate to expansive, as if the song itself had layers slowly unfolding.
Recorded in 2013 and released in July 2014 as the lead single from Dream Your Life Away, Mess Is Mine wasn’t an instant hit. The album, which topped Australian charts in September of that year, featured this track as one of its centerpieces, but the real turning point came when it ended up in video game and TV soundtracks: from FIFA 15 to an episode of Hart of Dixie and even the trailer for The Big Sick. It even appeared in a Delta commercial in 2015, giving it reach Vance Joy himself didn’t foresee. He later shared that many songs on this album, including this one, stemmed from his experience with Amber Morris, a woman he met while touring Texas. Producer Ryan Hadlock gave it that warm, organic touch that makes the guitar sound like it’s playing on a porch at dusk.
