The story behind
Wasted Time, according to DoReSol
This song sticks in the memory because of its slow rhythm and those lyrics that feel handwritten, as if every word had been measured before falling. It's not a track that seeks to grab attention immediately; instead, it settles into the listener with a calm that invites them to stay a little longer. Vance Joy's voice here sounds more intimate than in other cuts from the album, almost as if he were sharing a secret among friends. What's interesting is that, despite not being a single, it managed to climb the charts in Australia and Canada without needing massive promotion. That speaks to how sometimes songs find their way without making a sound.
They recorded it in 2013, before the artist became a household name outside of Australia. The album, Dream Your Life Away, was released in September 2014 and became Vance Joy's first to reach the top spot on local charts. The curious thing is that, even though Wasted Time wasn't officially released as a single, its five-minute length didn't stop it from standing out. Producer Ryan Hadlock gave it an organic feel, as if each instrument breathed in time with the vocals. By January 2018, the album had already sold over two million copies worldwide, but this particular song always stood out for feeling closer than the rest of the material.
