The story behind

Fotografia, according to DoReSol

The melody of Fotografia, born in 1959, has a particular story behind its creation. Antônio Carlos Jobim, a key figure in bossa nova, composed it during a time when his usual collaborator, Vinicius de Moraes, was abroad, fulfilling a diplomatic role in Montevideo. This absence, which lasted for much of 1958 and 1959, gave Jobim the opportunity to explore writing his own lyrics, something he rarely did. Thus, Fotografia became one of the first pieces where he himself captured both the music and the words, though later Ray Gilbert would publish the English versions in 1965.

The atmosphere of the song has been described in various ways. For jazz critic Gary Giddins, in The New Yorker, it is a work "ingenious" imbued with "seductive romance." Meanwhile, Mark Holston, from Jazziz Magazine, called it "hypnotic," while Jurek, from AllMusic, captured its essence as a "tone of memory and saudade." Singer Flora Purim, who included it in her 2001 album Perpetual Emotion, offered a cultural perspective on its meaning in Brazil, linking it to clandestine loves and furtive encounters at dusk, a romance that must end before returning to families, a "farewell kiss" amid forbidden love.

Fotografia has been a recurring title in projects dedicated to Tom Jobim. It was used for a tribute album by Wanda Sá in 2014 and for a 2005 compilation titled Fotografia: Os Anos Dourados de Tom Jobim, which gathered lesser-known material. The first recorded performance of the piece was in 1959 by Sylvia Telles, on her album Amor De Gente Moça. Later, in 1967, Jobim himself recorded it with English lyrics for his album A Certain Mr. Jobim. The song has been performed by numerous MPB artists, including versions by Gal Costa, Elis Regina alongside Tom Jobim on the 1974 album Elis & Tom, and Nara Leão.
