The story behind
In El viejo de arriba, Bersuit Vergarabat brings us a story that stems from a very specific incident. The lyrics are inspired by a police event that featured keyboardist Juan Subirá and vocalist Gustavo Cordera as protagonists. It all happened at Subirá's house in the year 2000, when a neighbor of Peruvian origin, nicknamed "Gato Félix" and who lived just above the musician's apartment, shot him twice in the left knee. The motive for the aggression was reportedly the parties that Subirá organized late at night. Cordera himself was also shot at, but managed to dodge the bullets. The song, which has a cumbia rhythmic base, even had a planned continuation, titled Canción de Juan, which would recount Subirá's transfer to the hospital for treatment.
This piece is part of the band's fifth studio album, Hijos del culo, released in the year 2000. Bersuit Vergarabat became known in the late nineties for their ability to fuse rock with American rhythms such as cumbia, tango, murga, or candombe. Their lyrics, moreover, were usually a direct criticism of the political system and society. The lineup that achieved great popularity included Gustavo Cordera on vocals, Juan Carlos Subirá on keyboards, accordion, and vocals, Carlos Martín on drums and percussion, Oscar Humberto Righi on guitar, Pepe Céspedes on bass and vocals, Daniel Suárez on vocals and backing vocals, Alberto Verenzuela on guitar, and Germán "Cóndor" Sbarbatti on vocals, backing vocals, and charango. The duration of El viejo de arriba is 3 minutes and 27 seconds.
