The story behind
In El coconito Natalia Lafourcade steps away from the piano and immerses herself in a territory where voice and rhythm become absolute protagonists. The song pulses with a collective energy that doesn’t hide: eighteen musicians playing live, without digital retouches, recorded directly onto analog tape over three weeks at the Sony Music studios. The result is a warm, almost organic sound where each instrument breathes alongside the singer. There are no layers of correction or edits to polish imperfections; what you hear is what happened in that moment, with its breaths, nuances, and that feeling that the song is being invented on the spot. The coconito —that playful character that appears in the lyrics— comes to life in the melody, as if the rhythm itself were a game of laughter and complicity.
The album Cancionera, released in April 2025, marks Natalia Lafourcade’s return under the alter ego of La Cancionera, a version of herself closer to folklore and oral tradition. The recording, made in Coatepec —her hometown in Veracruz—, reflects that search for authenticity that has defined her career. Produced alongside Adán Jodorowsky, the album explores sounds that dialogue with the past yet sound fresh, as if time had not passed. El coconito lasts three minutes and fifty-two seconds, but within that brief space decades of Mexican musical history fit, told by someone who knows the best music is born when it is allowed to flow.
