Coldplay wrote Don’t Panic in the year 2000, when they were still starting out. The song is part of the band's first studio album, Parachutes, which was released in the United Kingdom on July 10th of that year. It was recorded in a London studio, with production by the band and the producer Ken Nelson, except for one song that was produced by Chris Allison.

The song has a smooth rhythm, with a guitar that feels clear and direct. The lyrics talk about a feeling of calm in the midst of uncertainty, as if one had to move forward without losing one's head. The duration is short, barely two minutes and seventeen seconds, but in that time it says a lot. On Last.fm, the song has over eight thousand plays and over two thousand listeners who regularly listen to it.
