Oasis released «Don't Look Back in Anger» as the fifth single from their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, released in October 1995. The song was written by the band's lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher, who also recorded it playing guitar and providing vocals. The studio recording also featured Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan on electric bass, and Alan White on drums. The session took place in May 1995 at Rockfield Studios, located in Monmouth, Wales, and was produced by Noel Gallagher himself alongside Owen Morris. The label that published it was Creation Records, and its duration is 4:48. The B-side included «Cum On Feel the Noize». The track reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the second Oasis song to do so, after «Some Might Say». It also reached the top spot on the charts in Ireland and Scotland. Its genre falls within britpop and rock, and over time it became one of the most recurring pieces at the band's concerts and live events, as well as one of the favourites among their followers. One of the song's most notable television appearances was in March 1996, when it played over the closing credits of the final episode of Our Friends in the North, a drama series broadcast on BBC Two. The story behind the phrase «so Sally can wait» was told in a 2006 radio interview by Liam Gallagher, who claimed to have been the author of that idea. Noel confirmed this in the bonus DVD titled «Lock the Box», produced alongside the compilation album Stop the Clocks. In a conversation with Colin Murray, Noel recounted: «I was doing it in the sound check and the so Sally bit, I wasn't singing that...and he [Liam] says, 'Are you singing so Sally can wait?' and I said, 'No.' and he said, 'Well you should do.'» The music video was directed by Nigel Dick and filmed in Pasadena, California. It features actor Patrick Macnee, known for playing John Steed in the television series The Avengers during the 1960s, a character who apparently had the band's sympathy. During filming, drummer Alan White met his future wife, Liz Atkins. The two married on 13 August 1997 at Studley Priory Hotel in Oxfordshire, although they later divorced. As for recognition in specialist lists, in 2006 Q magazine placed it at number 20 on the greatest songs of all time. New Musical Express placed it at number 14 on the 50 greatest indie songs in history. Meanwhile, XFM magazine placed it second on the 100 greatest British songs, behind «Live Forever» —number one— and ahead of «Wonderwall» —number three—, both also by Oasis. The song was included in two compilations: Stop the Clocks (2006) and Time Flies… 1994–2009 (2010). The single was marketed in various formats and identifiers: CD (CRESCD 221), cassette in Australia (662725 8), 7" vinyl (CRE 221), CD in cardsleeve (HES 662725 1), cassette (CRECS 221), CD in the United States (34K 78356), cassette in the United States (34T 78356), promotional CD for Europe (SAMP 3093) and promotional CD for the United States (ESK 8024). Oasis was formed in Manchester in 1991, and that local connection meant that «Don't Look Back in Anger» became a symbol of collective mourning following the terrorist attack of 22 May 2017 at the Manchester Arena, which occurred during a concert by Ariana Grande and claimed 22 lives. On 23 May, students from Chetham's School of Music in Manchester performed the song. Two days later, on the 25th, the crowd gathered in the city centre sang it spontaneously after the minute of silence in honour of the victims. The woman who started that singing told the British newspaper The Guardian: «I love Manchester and Oasis is part of my childhood. Don't Look Back in Anger is a song that speaks precisely about not being able to look back at what has happened. We must look towards the future». These episodes brought the song back to the top of the charts, alongside Ariana Grande's «One Last Time», which reached number one on the iTunes Singles Chart on 26 May. On 27 May, the song was performed again as a tribute before 50,000 people during a performance by The Courteeners in Manchester.
