The story behind

Dis pourquoi, according to DoReSol

The song "Dis Pourquoi," which is 4 minutes and 40 seconds long, is part of Desireless's debut album, titled *François*. This album, originally released in 1989 and reissued in 2001, is named after François Tabah, a French composer with whom the singer, Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, shared eighteen years of her life. The inclusion of “Dis Pourquoi” on this album came at a pivotal moment for Desireless, right after the massive success of their single “Voyage, Voyage,” which had dominated the charts in Europe and Asia. This context suggests a period of artistic consolidation, during which Desireless’s musical vision—already recognized for its global success—expanded into a more comprehensive body of work.

The career of Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, born on Christmas Day in 1952, took a unique path before her musical success. After a stint as a fashion designer and trips to India in 1980, she found her calling in singing. It was in 1984 that she met producer Jean-Michel Rivat, marking the beginning of their collaboration. A year later, in 1985, she met François Tabah, whose influence would be so great that his name would inspire the title of her first album. Her big breakthrough came in 1986 with the release of “Voyage, Voyage,” a single that not only reached number one on numerous European charts but also sold over five million copies. This track was even remixed in 1988—known as the “Britmix”—by P. Hammond and P. Waterman. Before establishing herself as Desireless, Claudie had explored other projects, such as the singles “Chercher l’Amour Fou” and “Qui Peut Savoir” under the name “Air” in 1989. The success of “Voyage, Voyage,” which resonated strongly in clubs and reached high positions on charts in places like Russia, was instrumental in the release of the album *François*. After the birth of her daughter in 1990, Claudie took a break from performing, returning in 1992 with her second album, *I Love You*, on which she took a more active role in songwriting and explored various styles, marking an evolution toward a more personal approach to her music.
