The story behind
When Rubén Blades released Antecedente in 1988, his band, previously known as Seis del Solar, adopted a new name: Son del Solar. This change was accompanied by a sonic reconfiguration, where trombones took center stage, replacing some parts previously covered by synthesizers. This album marked a return to Blades' salsa roots, as he had expressed discomfort with older studio recording techniques, feeling they distorted the music's energy.
The album Antecedente was well-received, reaching number 8 on Billboard's Tropical Albums chart. Furthermore, it was recognized with a Grammy award in the category of "Best Tropical Latin Performance." The album's production was handled by Rubén Blades himself. Interestingly, Antecedente was often compared in reviews to Los Lobos' La Pistola y El Corazón, as both works represented a return to roots for their respective artists.
