The story behind
Con los años que me quedan, according to DoReSol
When Gloria Estefan set out to record Mi tierra, her first album entirely in Spanish, she not only sought to connect with her Cuban roots but also to explore the different facets of love. From that project was born Con los años que me quedan, a piece that, along with its English counterpart If We Were Lovers, celebrates affection from different angles. While one focuses on the renewal of a love that feels eternal, the other narrates a story of passion and sensuality. Both share the same melodic structure, but they were conceived as independent compositions, each with its own emotional nuance.
This song, released in September 1993, quickly became a hit, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart and remaining there for four weeks. The composition of Con los años que me quedan is the work of Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan Jr., who also took on the main production, with the collaboration of Clay Ostwald and Jorge Casas. The album Mi tierra, from which this single is taken, was recorded at Crescent Moon Studios in Miami, Florida, and stood out for incorporating Cuban musical genres such as boleros, danzón, and son music. This discographic work was a milestone, being the first album to reach number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart in the United States, where it remained in that position for 58 weeks, a record that stood until 2021.
