The story behind
The piece titled Colours, with its almost nine minutes in length, presents itself as an extensive sonic exploration that moves away from conventional structures. Phil Collins' work on this track, part of the album …But Seriously, invites immersion in a composition that, while addressing serious and reflective themes, does so through a musical development that encourages attentive and prolonged listening. This album, released in the United Kingdom in 1989 by Virgin Records and in the United States by Atlantic Records, marked a turning point after Collins' tour with Genesis in 1987, a period in which the group entered a four-year hiatus. During this time, Collins also dedicated himself to acting, participating in the film Buster in 1988.
By the spring of 1989, Collins had already gathered the material for this new solo project. The lyrics of …But Seriously focused on deeper matters, touching on socioeconomic and political themes, contrasting with the more danceable approach of his previous record, No Jacket Required from 1985. The album …But Seriously had notable commercial success worldwide, reaching the top spot on the charts in the United Kingdom for fifteen weeks and in the United States for four non-consecutive weeks. The career of Philip David Charles Collins, born in Chiswick, England, in 1951, has positioned him as a prominent figure in rock music, not only as a singer but also as a drummer and songwriter. From 1970 to 1996, he was the lead singer of Genesis, and he has maintained sporadic collaborations with the band since 2007.
