The first time I heard Clair de Lune, I froze. It wasn’t that the melody grabbed me all at once, but rather the weight of those eleven minutes never lets go—not for a second. It’s not a song you listen to; it’s a place you inhabit: Kamasi Washington’s saxophone paints a landscape where the intimate and the epic collide without warning, as if every note breathes in slow motion. What struck me most when I tried to play it was how the piece hangs on a single chord for nearly its entire duration, yet never feels static. There’s a play of dynamics that shifts from whispers to controlled explosions, as though the musician were telling a story in real time rather than merely performing a score.
They recorded it in 2015 alongside the rest of the album The Epic, a work released by Brainfeeder that critics immediately hailed with top marks.
