The story behind
The track Miss Understanding by Kamasi Washington is built on a hypnotic groove that grips the listener for its nearly nine minutes. The rhythmic foundation pulses in a meter that expands and contracts, as if time itself breathes between long notes and calculated silences. It is not just a jazz song: it is a journey where the horns converse organically with the drums, without haste but without forced pauses. The piece was born in the context of The Epic, the album Kamasi Washington released in May 2015 under the Brainfeeder label. It was recorded by a team of seven engineers — Tony Austin, Chris Constable, Julie Everson, Carson Lehman, Conrad Leon, Brian Rosemeyer, and Tyler Shields — who worked without hurry but without pause, capturing everything live to preserve the sense of immediacy that defines the record. The mix was handled by Benjamin Tierney, who balanced the instruments so that each layer sounded clear, even in the densest passages. Washington not only composed and produced the track but also arranged it, giving it the melodic freedom that makes Miss Understanding sound at first listen like something spontaneous, yet by the third listen, the extreme care in every transition becomes evident.
