"Champagne Supernova" is the twelfth single by Oasis, an English rock band, and serves as the closing track of their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. The track was composed by Noel Gallagher and recorded in May 1995, with a running time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds in its album version and 5 minutes and 8 seconds in the radio edit. The performance featured Noel and the rest of the band, including his younger brother, vocalist Liam Gallagher. Production was handled by Owen Morris and Noel Gallagher himself, and the label that distributed the single in Australia and New Zealand was Helter Skelter. The single release was limited to Australia, France and the United States, although the music video circulated on channels around the world, generating a wide presence for the song on both television and radio. The video received particularly massive exposure on MTV globally. The music video was directed by Nigel Dick. The B-side of the single is "Slide Away". The physical formats released included a single CD with reference 663344 4, a cassette with the same reference, a promotional CD for the United Kingdom (RKIDS35CPD), a 12" promotional vinyl (RKID35TP) and a 7" promotional vinyl distributed by the German edition of Rolling Stone. The origin of the title has a particular story: Noel misheard the name of The Pixies' album Bossanova while watching a documentary about champagne, and from that confusion the name of the song was born. As for the lyrics, Noel acknowledged in a 2005 interview that he still does not know for certain what the song is about, although he believes it has something to do with reincarnation. The composition belongs to the britpop and psychedelic rock genres, and its words do not correspond to a concrete meaning, but were chosen for their sound and the way the singer pronounces them. The phrase "Caught beneath the landslide" came to Noel when he walked into the kitchen of his girlfriend's house and saw a vase by Alessi Gianni. That sugar bowl can be seen in the CD booklet, where the song lyrics also appear. In the music video, Liam appears wearing purple-tinted glasses and a beard, which is interpreted as a tribute to John Lennon. The song is considered one of the favourites among the band's followers. An anecdote linked to the genesis of the song involves guitarist Paul Arthurs, nicknamed "Bonehead". In an interview with the BBC, Noel humorously remarked that Arthurs cried during the recording because he found the song "very beautiful". This account was confirmed by Ian Robertson in his book Oasis: What's The Story?, where he recounts that the first time Noel played "Champagne Supernova" for the rest of the band — in an acoustic version, aboard a bus — Bonehead did indeed burst into tears. Noel's immediate reaction was to wonder: "Is the song really that bad?" The recording of the track also featured Paul Weller, leader of The Jam and a friend of the band, who played lead guitar. The song was later included on the compilation album Stop the Clocks.
