The story behind

Celebration, according to DoReSol

There are songs that, upon listening, transport you directly to a moment of pure joy. *Celebration*, by Kool & the Gang, is one of those. It's not just a catchy tune; it's an invitation to set worries aside and join the party. What's interesting is that, behind that infectious energy, there are several ideas about its origin. On one hand, Ronald Bell, one of the group's founders and arranger, said he was inspired by reading passages from the Quran about the creation of Adam and the celebration of angels. From there, the idea of a universal call emerged: "Everyone around the world, come on, celebration." But Robert "Kool" Bell has another version, more tied to the music they were already making.

He recalls that Ronald was listening to the band's previous hit, *Ladies' Night* (1979), and noticed the phrase "This is your night tonight, come on, let’s all celebrate." From there, he decided to build a complete song. The music itself is a collaboration of the entire group, with a tempo of 123 beats per minute and a vocal range from A♭3 to E♭5. Critics at the time already noted its potential, describing it as "a big party with hooks, great choruses, and a powerful bass." This track, released in October 1980 as the first single from the album *Celebrate!*, became a milestone for Kool & the Gang. It was their first and only number one on the U.S.

Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top on February 7, 1981, and staying there for two weeks. By the end of 1980, it was also topping the Billboard Dance and R&B charts. The song received extensive radio play throughout the year and, over time, became a classic at weddings, parties, and sporting events, even becoming the official theme for the St. Louis Cardinals after their 1982 World Series victory. It also held special significance in 1981, playing to celebrate the release of American hostages in Iran. Its reach was international, peaking at number 7 in the UK. The song has been covered, such as by the band Dragon in 1987, which reached number 11 on the Australian Kent Music Report, or by Kylie Minogue in 1992, which hit number 20 in the UK.

In 2016, *Celebration* was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2021, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation due to its cultural and historical value.
