Carmen is a four-act opera written by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a short novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. It premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875. The work surprised its initial audience by breaking with established norms. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, without knowing that in the ten years that followed his work would gain international fame.
