The creation of Messy, and thus of Carmen, was marked by Dean's intention to capture the "imperfection" inherent to early adulthood. This concept was even reflected in the album's title, which was originally going to be Between Islands, alluding to her British and Caribbean roots. However, during the recording process, the name changed to Messy to better capture the chaotic and sincere essence of the compositions. The recording involved engineers such as Aqualung, Daniel Moyler, and James Pinfield-Wells, while the mixing was handled by Nathan Boddy and the production was carried out by Aqualung.
