Olivia Dean's song UFO delves into the experience of that life stage where things feel a bit messy, but in an authentic way. It is part of her first studio album, Messy, released in 2023. This record, which reached fourth place on the UK Albums Chart and earned a silver certification, aimed to capture the essence of early adulthood with all its complexities. Originally, the album was going to be called Between Islands, a nod to her roots, but the title changed to Messy during the recording process to better reflect the honesty and chaos inherent in Dean's compositions.

The recording of UFO and the rest of the album featured Daniel Moyler and James Pinfield-Wells as recording engineers, while Nathan Boddy handled the mixing. The production was overseen by Aqualung. This album, which was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2023, was developed after a series of EPs that Dean had released between 2019 and 2021, and which were well-received.
