This discographic work, which reached fourth place on the UK Albums Chart, was conceived by Dean with the intention of capturing that "imperfection" that accompanies the early years of adulthood. The album's title, Messy, emerged during the recording sessions, reflecting the honesty and inherent chaos of her compositions, a change from the original title, Between Islands, which referenced her heritage.

The production of Ladies Room and the rest of the album featured the work of Aqualung and Aston Rudi as producers, while the recording engineering was handled by Aqualung, Daniel Moyler, and James Pinfield-Wells. The final mixing was done by Manon Grandjean. This album, released on June 30, 2023, by EMI Records, not only achieved a good chart position but was also recognized when it was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2023, and received a silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry.
