The story behind

Titãs recorded Cabeça dinossauro in three weeks, in a Rio studio that smelled of dampness and old cables. They weren’t aiming for polish: they wanted something that sounded like a garage, like muffled screams trapped between walls that didn’t echo back. The album came out in June 1986, with a producer who was also running the record label at the time, Liminha, who opened the door to a rawer sound. By December, they already had their first gold record—but what’s striking is that the album wasn’t born from a grand plan. It was the sum of things happening around them: their previous record, Televisão, hadn’t worked as expected; Arnaldo Antunes and Tony Bellotto had been jailed in 1985; and their relationship with the label was tense, almost a struggle. So in the Nas Nuvens studio, between March and April, they crafted something that smelled of urgency and cheap punk, with guitars that sliced like dull knives. The song Cabeça dinossauro lasts just over two minutes, but in that time it packs more ideas than many long tracks. There’s no filler: it kicks off with a riff that hooks like a fishhook and doesn’t let go until the end. The vocals blur between screams, whispers, and choruses that sound like an out-of-control crowd. It’s as if the track were recorded in one take, with no time to fix mistakes—and that’s what gives it the nervous energy that makes it instantly recognizable. The album itself was a turning point: it marked the start of a phase where Titãs abandoned the clean melodies of their early records and embraced noise, distortion, and lyrics about things no one else was singing about at the time.
