The story behind

The song Behind Blue Eyes, born from the pen of Pete Townshend, has a unique story that goes beyond its melody. It was conceived in 1970, after a concert in Denver, when Townshend, instead of giving in to temptation, chose to retreat alone to his room. In that moment of introspection, influenced by the teachings of his spiritual guide, Meher Baba, he began to write a prayer. The first words of that prayer, "When my fist clenches, crack it open...", found their way into the most intense and rocking part of the song. Originally, Behind Blue Eyes was intended for the Lifehouse project, where it would be the voice of the antagonist, a character named Jumbo. The lyrics, from that perspective, expressed frustration and the feeling of being forced into a villainous role, despite feeling intrinsically good.

Musically, Behind Blue Eyes presents itself as a ballad that fuses art rock and folk rock, with a moderate tempo of 116 beats per minute. It begins intimately, with a solo voice over an arpeggiated acoustic guitar in E minor. Gradually, bass and ethereal harmonies are added, preparing the ground for a rocking explosion. The song's structure, with its contrasting sections, reflects a compositional technique that Townshend had already been exploring, and echoes of his work on Tommy can even be perceived. In fact, a guitar motif at the end of the rock section reappears in Won't Get Fooled Again, suggesting a connection between the two pieces, originally conceived as part of the same rock opera. The version we know on the 1971 album Who's Next is actually the second recording; the first, recorded in New York with Al Kooper on the Hammond organ, was later included as a bonus on the 1995 reissue. Despite being initially considered "too out of character" for the UK singles market, Behind Blue Eyes was released as a single in several countries, including the United States, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
