The story behind
When approaching Lean on My Soul, we encounter a piece that distills the essence of the great orchestras of yesteryear, but with the unmistakable imprint of Rubén Blades. The inspiration for this work, and particularly for songs like this one, stems from a deep admiration for legendary figures in Latin music such as Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez, and Willie Rosario. The idea was to recreate that powerful and vibrant sound of the big bands of the fifties, but filtered through Blades' sensibility and narrative. The collaboration with Roberto Delgado and his orchestra was key to materializing this vision, achieving a result that resonated positively with specialized critics.
This album, Salsa Big Band, released in 2017, represents a continuation of Blades' previous work with Roberto Delgado & Orquesta on Son de Panamá (2015). For this new project, they embarked on recording eleven tracks. Of these compositions, nine were original creations, while two were reinterpretations of pieces written by Luis Demetrio and René Touzet. Roberto Delgado took on the production, guiding the sound towards that sonic atmosphere that evoked the glorious past of big bands, an echo of the golden age of dance music and orchestral sophistication.
