The story behind
Almendra, according to DoReSol
Almendra is one of those pieces where silence and strings become the true language. There is no voice, only two Ovation guitars resonating in a dialogue that seems written between the lines. Spinetta and Eduardo Martí —known as El Turco— weave an instrumental melody that needs no words to tell its story. The song floats in a nostalgic air, as if each note were a memory of those years when Spinetta was forming his first band, just as Argentine rock was beginning to find its own voice. He recorded it in 1982 for Kamikaze, his fourth solo album, and although it has no lyrics, the title is a direct nod to Almendra, the band that launched him into the world decades earlier.
El Turco, besides being his right hand in photography and videos, contributes here a rhythmic counterpoint that balances Spinetta’s improvisation. What’s curious is that, unintentionally, this song ends up being a bridge between two eras: that of the young man dreaming of revolutionizing rock and the established musician looking back with the same intensity.
