The story behind
All I Ever Wanted, according to DoReSol
In All I Ever Wanted the hook isn't in an epic riff or an unexpected melodic twist, but in that voice that sways between confession and whisper. It's a song that sounds like an intimate conversation where the narrator lists, almost breathlessly, everything they don't want to lose: "I don't want to lose what we have." The chorus is anchored in a minor chord that resolves with deceptive calm, as if the weight of those words lightens when sung. What's most curious is that this sense of contained urgency doesn't come from an accelerated rhythm, but from the way the melody stretches over a slow tempo, almost as if each syllable had to be savored before moving on to the next.
They recorded it in the studio of Ryan Hadlock, a producer who often works with artists seeking to capture the raw essence of their songs. All I Ever Wanted appeared on Vance Joy's debut album, Dream Your Life Away, released in September 2014 in Australia and New Zealand, and a week later in the United States. By January 2018, it had already surpassed two million copies sold worldwide, and the album remained in the top spot on Australian charts for weeks. The extended version, released in September 2015, included two new tracks and five live recordings, but the original song had already found its way without needing adornments.
