Nas

Nas, the guy who calls himself that, started making music in Brooklyn in the early 90s. His dad was a jazz musician, and from a young age he had a ear for rhythms. He began recording songs in secret, under a fake name, "Nasty Nas," and got into the East Coast rap scene. He was a friend of Large Professor, and in 1991 he recorded something with his group, the Main Source, on a song called "Live at the Barbeque".

In 1992 he signed with Columbia Records and released his first album, *Illmatic*. It was an album that made a difference. Although no one said it, everyone understood it. Then came *It Was Written*, which put him in the spotlight. It sold a lot, and one of his songs, "If I Ruled the World," got on the radio. But later, in the 90s, he started sounding more commercial, and some said he was losing his edge.

Biography

In 2001 he got into a conflict with Jay-Z. He released everything, with a track called "Ether". That put him back on the map. Then he released *Stillmatic*, *God's Son*, and a double album called *Street's Disciple*. With that, he started sounding like himself again. Later he reconciled with Jay-Z and moved to Def Jam. In 2006 he started talking more about politics, with *Hip Hop Is Dead* and an untitled album. In 2010 he released an album with Damian Marley, and donated the royalties to African causes.

Today he continues releasing albums, all produced by Hit-Boy. In 2020 he won a Grammy with *King's Disease*. Then came *King's Disease II*, *Magic*, and more. In 2025 he released an album with DJ Premier, which he had been waiting for. Outside of music, he also has a magazine, *Mass Appeal*, and his own label. He has released seventeen albums, and many of them have certifications. He's a guy who never stops, and keeps doing things.
