Fleetwood Mac

When we think of Fleetwood Mac, it’s easy to picture that distinctive blend of rock with pop touches and a melodic sensibility that made them sound so unique. They began their journey in 1967 in London, and from the start, drummer Mick Fleetwood was the figure who kept them together over the years. The band’s name came about quite directly: combining the surnames of Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, who joined shortly after everything began.

At first, their sound was deeply rooted in British blues. In fact, in 1968 they scored a number one hit in the UK with the instrumental piece Albatross. They also had other top ten hits in Britain with songs like Man of the World and Oh Well in 1969, and The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown) in 1970. However, Peter Green’s departure in May 1970 marked a turning point. Two months later, Christine McVie, who had already collaborated with them as a session musician, officially joined the group, bringing vocals and keyboards. In those early years, other musicians like Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, and Bob Welch also passed through the band. By the end of 1974, they had all left, leaving the band without a guitarist or lead singer.

More about Fleetwood Mac

Biography

It was in Los Angeles, while Mick Fleetwood was looking for recording studios, that he heard the American folk-rock duo Buckingham Nicks, consisting of guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks. In December 1974, Fleetwood invited Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac, on the condition that Nicks could also be part of the lineup. This addition radically changed the band’s sound, giving it a more pop-rock edge. The result was their 1975 self-titled album, Fleetwood Mac, which reached number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Their next release, 1977’s Rumours, became one of the best-selling albums of all time and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1978.

The lineup remained stable for three more albums, but changes began in the late 1980s. After Buckingham left in 1987, he was replaced by Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, though the latter left in 1990 along with Stevie Nicks. A special moment occurred in 1993, when the classic 1974–1987 lineup reunited for a performance at the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton. Four years later, the full reunion took place, and Fleetwood Mac released The Dance in 1997, a live album celebrating the 20th anniversary of Rumours and the band’s 30th anniversary, achieving their fourth number one in the US. Christine McVie left in 1998 but returned in 2014 for the "On With the Show Tour." Their last studio album, Say You Will, came out in 2003. In 2018, Buckingham was fired and replaced by Mike Campbell and Neil Finn. Following Christine McVie’s death in 2022, Stevie Nicks stated in 2024 that she saw little likelihood of the band continuing without her.

Throughout their career, Fleetwood Mac has been honored in various ways. In 1979, they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and won the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2018, the Recording Academy awarded them the MusiCares Person of the Year, recognizing their artistic achievements and philanthropic work.
