Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, emerged on the music scene from San Juan, Puerto Rico, not only as a performer but as a key figure in defining and expanding a sound that would resonate globally. His early connection to music, influenced by a percussionist father and a musically inclined family, laid the groundwork for his development. However, it was his encounter with Spanish-language hip-hop and life in his neighborhood that shaped his perspective. The nickname "yankee," which in Puerto Rican slang refers to someone who excels in their field, began to define his trajectory. His foray into the recording world materialized in 1992 with an appearance on DJ Playero's *mixtape*, Playero 34. An incident in his youth, which left him with a gunshot wound to the leg, cut short his aspirations of becoming a professional baseball player, definitively redirecting his energy towards music, which until then he considered a hobby.

The 1990s were fundamental in establishing his presence. In 1997, he released his debut EP, No Mercy, and continued to collaborate closely with DJ Playero on productions such as Playero 39 and Playero 40. That same year marked a milestone when he participated in the production Boricua Guerrero, sharing credits with Nas on the song «The Prophecy». Additionally, Daddy Yankee took his first steps as a producer with El Cartel, which included the track «Posición», part of the *soundtrack* for the film One Tough Cop. In the late 90s, he explored the idea of forming a duo with Jam, releasing the single «Ven Yal» together on the production Royal Family in 2000. The consolidation of his work with Alex Gárgolas on Gargolas 3 with «Donde están las gatas» and the release of his second album as a producer, El Cartel 2, in 2001, demonstrated his growing influence and versatility.
