More about Bill Monroe
Biography
Of everything he recorded in those early decades, two pieces stand out for encapsulating his essence. "Uncle Pen," composed in 1950, is a direct tribute to Vandiver, the uncle who took him to dances and passed the rhythm "in his bones." Monroe recorded it in 1972 on the album Bill Monroe's Uncle Pen, reviving traditional melodies Vandiver played on fiddle as if time had not passed. But if there’s one song that crossed borders unintentionally, it’s "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Elvis Presley covered it in his early days at Sun Records, and though Monroe never chased rock, the song became a bridge between genres. Patsy Cline also adapted it to her style, proving that the "lonely and high" sound he pursued could suit any voice. Monroe didn’t just invent a style: he created a language that other musicians, unwittingly, inherited.
