The album spawned several songs that resonated with the public. The title track, Sowing the Seeds of Love, became a hit, and others like Woman in Chains and Advice for the Young at Heart reached the top 40 in charts in several countries. The pursuit of that more human sound led Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith to invite vocalist and pianist Oleta Adams to collaborate. They had discovered her playing in a hotel in Kansas City during a tour in 1985, and her voice brought a soulful warmth to tracks like Woman in Chains, Badman’s Song, and Standing on the Corner of the Third World. The genesis of Badman’s Song, for example, dates back to 1985, born from a personal experience of Orzabal.
The Seeds of Love had a very positive international reception, debuting at number one in the UK and entering the top ten in the United States, in addition to achieving Gold and Platinum certifications in countries like France, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands. Despite this success, tensions that arose during the recording led Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal to separate after their 1990 world tour. In October 2020, a remastered reissue of the album was released, including additional material such as B-sides, remixes, and a 5.1 surround sound mix, offering a new perspective on this work.
