The Seeds of Love

When Tears for Fears embarked on the creation of The Seeds of Love, the goal was to go beyond what they had done before. Released in 1989, this album sought a richer, more organic sound, moving away from the programmed structure that had dominated their music. The idea was to incorporate influences ranging from soul and jazz to pop with hints of The Beatles, seeking a warmth that machines could not offer. The recording process was extensive, stretching from late 1986 to July 1989, and took place in studios such as Real World in Box, Wiltshire, and Townhouse in London. The result was an album that, despite its ambition and considerable production cost, managed to capture a distinctive sonic essence.

About the album

The Seeds of Love, according to DoReSol

The album spawned several songs that resonated with the public. The title track, Sowing the Seeds of Love, became a hit, and others like Woman in Chains and Advice for the Young at Heart reached the top 40 in charts in several countries. The pursuit of that more human sound led Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith to invite vocalist and pianist Oleta Adams to collaborate. They had discovered her playing in a hotel in Kansas City during a tour in 1985, and her voice brought a soulful warmth to tracks like Woman in Chains, Badman’s Song, and Standing on the Corner of the Third World. The genesis of Badman’s Song, for example, dates back to 1985, born from a personal experience of Orzabal.

The Seeds of Love had a very positive international reception, debuting at number one in the UK and entering the top ten in the United States, in addition to achieving Gold and Platinum certifications in countries like France, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands. Despite this success, tensions that arose during the recording led Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal to separate after their 1990 world tour. In October 2020, a remastered reissue of the album was released, including additional material such as B-sides, remixes, and a 5.1 surround sound mix, offering a new perspective on this work.
