The story behind

Standing on the Corner of the Third World, according to DoReSol

The song Standing on the Corner of the Third World by Tears for Fears stems from a deep personal process by Roland Orzabal. He himself recounted that the lyrics were born from his therapy sessions, which he attended three times a week. These sessions led him to an emotionally open state, and it was in that context that the ideas for this track emerged. The music became a way to process emotions related to his family life, including experiences of domestic abuse his mother had suffered. For Orzabal, writing this song was not difficult. The title itself evokes an image of containment and safety, yet with the subtle warning of a vast and desolate area that requires attention.

The recording of Standing on the Corner of the Third World involved top-tier musicians. Curt Smith and Orzabal contacted Oleta Adams two years before the song was recorded in 1987. The nine-minute version, included as a live jam on the deluxe edition of the album The Seeds of Love, featured Oleta Adams on vocals, Manu Katche on drums, and Pino Palladino on bass, who also contributed the distinctive fretless bass sound. These live sessions were described as magical by Orzabal, who linked them directly to his primal therapy period. The album The Seeds of Love, released on September 25, 1989, explored influences ranging from jazz and soul to pop with a beatlesque touch, achieving international success and reaching number one in the UK and the top ten in the United States.
