Arbeit macht frei

Area released Arbeit macht frei in 1973, an album that blends jazz fusion, progressive rock and experimental rock. The band, still in its early formation, had a sound that didn't resemble what was being heard at that time. The songs range from political to personal, and in some, the message is very clear. The title, taken from a phrase seen on the gates of concentration camps, was no accident. It was a way of criticizing society and the system, something the band did with force.

About the album

Arbeit macht frei, according to DoReSol

The most famous song, Luglio, agosto, settembre (nero), is based on a Greek melody but has a message about the conflict in the Middle East. In the version that was released, the word "nero" was censored, and the song wasn't played on the radio. The same happened with L'abbattimento dello Zeppelin, a piece that was born from an improvisation in a pub. The band got the wrong topic, made it up, and took it. The song is experimental, breaks the rules, and is based on the riff of Whole Lotta Love, something that can be heard in the solo.
