Bill Haley and His Comets

Bill Haley non ha inventato il rock and roll, ma ha aiutato il mondo ad ascoltarne il suono. Il suo stile nasceva dalla musica country e dal blues, ma quando incise Rocket 88 nel 1951 —una versione country di un brano di Ike Turner— qualcosa cambiò. Il riff di piano e la batteria accelerata non suonavano più come ciò che si ascoltava alla radio in quel periodo. Non fu il primo brano a muoversi così, ma fu uno dei primi a varcare i confini: prima a Filadelfia, poi in tutti gli Stati Uniti. Haley non cercava di infrangere le regole; voleva solo che la sua musica suonasse fresca. E ci riuscì.

Nel 1954, il gruppo —che allora si chiamava Bill Haley and the Saddlemen— aveva un nome nuovo: Bill Haley and His Comets. Il cambiamento non fu solo di etichetta. La band adattò la sua energia a un ritmo che non era più country, ma qualcosa di più diretto. Crazy Man, Crazy e Rock the Joint arrivarono prima di Rock Around the Clock, ma fu quest’ultimo a rimanere. Il brano non iniziò come un successo: nei primi mesi non raggiunse nemmeno le posizioni alte. Finché, nel 1955, il DJ Alan Freed lo utilizzò in un film e il tema esplose. Nel 1956, era già da mesi al primo posto delle classifiche.

Biografia

La cosa curiosa è che, mentre Haley e i suoi Comets salivano alla ribalta, altri artisti come Elvis Presley e Little Richard arrivavano con uno stile più audace. Haley rimase lo stesso: con la sua ciocca sulla fronte e i vestiti eleganti, ma il pubblico giovanile non lo vedeva più come un ribelle. In Europa, invece, la band mantenne la sua popolarità. Anni dopo, negli anni ’70, Haley tornò sulla scena come un’icona di un’altra epoca, suonando per folle desiderose di rivivere quegli esordi del rock. Quando morì nel 1981, lasciò non solo canzoni, ma una band che, come lui, rimase viva in diversi gruppi che adottarono il nome Comets. Oggi, più di quarant’anni dopo, quattro di questi ensemble sono ancora in tournée.
