The story behind

You Can Call Me Al, according to DoReSol

The story behind *You Can Call Me Al* is fascinating, and it deviates quite a bit from what one might expect from a track that became one of Paul Simon's biggest hits. The initial spark came from a curious incident at a party. Simon, along with his then-wife, Peggy Harper, attended an event where the French composer Pierre Boulez, mistaking them, referred to Paul as "Al" and Peggy as "Betty." That anecdote, seemingly trivial, planted the seed for the song's lyrics, which explore the idea of an individual going through a midlife crisis, questioning their life and surroundings.

The recording of *You Can Call Me Al* took place in April 1986 at The Hit Factory in New York. This sets it apart from most of the songs on the album *Graceland*, which were recorded in various locations around the world. To create unique sonic textures, Adrian Belew used a guitar synthesizer to emulate different types of saxophone, giving the song a distinctive character from its outset. The arrangement of the horn section, comprising eight brass instruments and a baritone saxophone, was the work of Rob Mounsey, who also contributed significantly to the rhythm and overall structure of the track. An interesting technical detail is the bass line performed by Bakithi Kumalo: a single measure of descending notes was inverted to create an ascending section, an experiment that sound engineer Roy Halee considered routine for enriching compositions. The final mix presented a challenge due to the speed of Simon's vocals over the complex instrumentation; Halee resolved this by employing delay effects to separate and clarify the vocals. The result was a track that, according to critics, captivatingly combined Afro-Caribbean polyrhythms with Simon's lyrics and vocal performance.
