The story behind
The Boy in the Bubble, according to DoReSol
The song *The Boy in the Bubble* was conceived at a particular moment in Paul Simon's career. After a period of personal ups and downs and a previous album, Hearts and Bones (1983), which did not have the expected impact, Simon immersed himself in South African music. He spent a couple of weeks in Johannesburg, recording with local musicians, which laid the groundwork for the sound that would define his next work. The recording of *The Boy in the Bubble* itself took between three and four months, a detailed process to achieve the sonic complexity he sought.
The lyrics of *The Boy in the Bubble* address serious themes such as famine and terrorism, but do so with a mix of wit and optimism. It is interesting to note that the only phrase Simon composed directly during his trip to South Africa was "The way the camera follows us in slo-mo, the way we look to us all". The visual inspiration for the music video, directed by Jim Blashfield, came from images of historical events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan. The song's title, for its part, was inspired by well-known medical cases such as those of David Vetter and Ted DeVita. Musically, the piece fuses African rhythms with zydeco influences, and features the participation of Adrian Belew on synthesized guitar, who recalled that Simon had few lyrics ready when they met.
