When You Gonna Learn (Digeridoo)

There is something in When You Gonna Learn (Digeridoo) that invites attention from the very first moment. The inclusion of the didgeridoo, an ancestral instrument, gives it a very particular sonic texture, which is especially felt in this track and in Didgin' Out, both part of Jamiroquai's debut album, Emergency On Planet Earth. This album, released in 1992, marked the band's entry into the music scene with a sound that fused funk with touches of acid jazz, disco, and electronica, a proposal that positioned them as references of the era alongside other groups like Brand New Heavies or Incognito. The lyrics of the singles from this work, including When You Gonna Learn, address themes of social and environmental protest, touching on pollution, hunger, and deforestation, which gives a layer of depth to the music.

The recording of Emergency On Planet Earth, and by extension of When You Gonna Learn (Digeridoo), took place in 1992. Jay Kay himself, leader and vocalist of Jamiroquai, was involved in the mixing, while Mike Nielsen was in charge of the recording engineering. Jay Kay also took on the role of producer. Born in London, Jamiroquai was formed that same year, with Kay accompanied by musicians such as Toby Smith on keyboards, Stuart Zender on bass, Nick Van Gelder on drums, and Wallis Buchanan on didgeridoo. The band's name is a combination of the term "jam" (musical improvisation) and the name of the Iroquois tribe, with whom Kay felt an affinity. This initial album was well received in the United Kingdom, laying the groundwork for later success that would expand across Europe and Japan.
