The story behind

The song When I Come Around, from Green Day's album Dookie, was built on a simple harmonic foundation, using a four-chord sequence in the key of G-flat major. Its structure is maintained in 4/4 time, with a clear alternation between verse and chorus. The way its sound is described is as a punk and carefree response to more emotional rock ballads. The track was released as the fourth single from Dookie in January 1995, although it had already been heard live since 1992 and reached radio in December 1994.

The impact of When I Come Around was reflected in the popularity charts. It reached sixth place on Billboard's radio airplay chart in the United States, an achievement it shares with Wake Me Up When September Ends as their second most prominent songs on that ranking, only surpassed by Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Additionally, it topped Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart for seven weeks and reached second place in the Album Rock Tracks category. Internationally, it ranked among the top ten most listened-to songs in Australia, Canada, Iceland, and New Zealand. By August 2010, 639,000 copies of this single had been sold, making it the band's second best-selling single of the 1990s, behind Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) from 1997. In 2023, to commemorate the anniversary of the Modern Rock Tracks chart (now Alternative Airplay), Billboard ranked it 19th among the most successful songs in the history of that list. The music video, directed by Mark Kohr, shows the band traveling through various locations in San Francisco and Berkeley, California, at night, interweaving everyday scenes. In the video, Jason White, who would later join the band as a touring guitarist, can be seen with his partner. The band recorded the album Dookie in 1993 at Fantasy Studios, in Berkeley, California, with production by Rob Cavallo and the group itself. The album, released on February 1, 1994, became Green Day's major-label debut and marked a more melodic sound within rock.
