The story behind

What You Wanted, according to DoReSol

This track from Native has a detail that makes it sound different from what usually comes on the radio: it starts with a bassline that weaves into a repetitive pattern, as if it didn’t want to let go, while the drums set a pulse that stretches without haste but without pause. It’s not the typical rhythm that pushes you abruptly; instead, it gradually draws you in from the first measure, as if the song knows it has to earn your attention before unleashing the chorus. Ryan Tedder’s voice enters with that air of contained urgency, as if he’s conveying something important but weighing every word, and the rest of the instruments—clean guitars, strings that peek in from time to time—move in layers, without overcrowding the space. It’s one of those songs that sounds simple at first listen but, when you dissect it, reveals more layers than it appears.

They recorded it in Los Angeles during the Native sessions, an album the band had planned to release in late 2012 but ended up delaying until March 2013. The first single meant to accompany the album was Feel Again, but since the material wasn’t ready, they postponed it and let the record mature for a few more months. What You Wanted was left out of that initial cut but ended up being one of the tracks that best captures the organic sound they were aiming for: the bass was played by Brent Kutzle, the mix was handled by Ryan Lipman and Joe Zook, and Smith Carlson was in charge of capturing every take in the studio. It lasts exactly four minutes and one second—just enough time for the song to develop its idea without losing its thread, but not so long as to drag on. After all, it wasn’t a song meant to be a massive anthem, but rather to fit into an album that wanted to sound fresh without falling into formulas.
