The story behind
The song What You Are by Audioslave, released as the fifth and final track from their self-titled debut album in March 2004, presents a sonic proposal that draws from the roots of 70s hard rock and 90s alternative rock. The track, with a duration of 4:09, was produced by Rick Rubin and featured composition by Tom Morello, Chris Cornell, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. It reached number 17 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart, and its theme is interpreted as a way to distance oneself from a conflictive female figure.
This track emerged at a key moment for the formation of Audioslave. Following Zack de la Rocha's departure from Rage Against the Machine, the remaining members sought a new vocalist. Rick Rubin, who also produced this album, suggested contacting Chris Cornell, vocalist of Soundgarden. The recording of the debut album, which includes What You Are, took place in 2002, and the album was released on November 18, 2002, through Epic Records and Interscope Records. The band's characteristic sound was forged in that fusion of styles, highlighting the exclusive use of real instruments in their recordings, without resorting to samples.
