The story behind
Wendy Clear, according to DoReSol
The song Wendy Clear by blink‐182 has a rather peculiar origin, linked to a boat and tour dynamics. The title comes from the name of Hoppus's boat, called "Wendy," and the way sailors announce that a channel is free for use, saying it is "clear." Hoppus composed this track while on tour with MxPx, and the inspiration came from a "forbidden" love interest, someone he was not supposed to be with. Specifically, it was a person who worked at blink‐182's record label at the time, MCA. The lyrics reflect that complicated situation, with lines like "I wish it didn't have to be so bad," expressing the desire for the relationship not to be a problem.
On a tour program, near the release of the album Enema, Tom left a brief note about each track. For Wendy Clear, he explained that Mark wrote the song about a girl he liked, but couldn't date because she was an influential figure in the music industry, making any relationship a delicate situation. The recording of this track involved Darrell Harvey, John Nelson, and Robert Read as engineers, while Jerry Finn handled the mixing and production. The musical arrangement was done by the band itself, blink‐182. The total duration of the piece is 2:50.
