This short version of Wasted Time, lasting just one minute and twenty-three seconds, functions as a melancholic echo within the album Hotel California. It is not a song for dancing or shouting, but rather an invitation to reflect on the passage of time and lost opportunities. The recording of this material, like the rest of the album Hotel California, took place between March and October 1976. Criteria and Record Plant studios were the settings where the band, along with producer Bill Szymczyk, shaped these pieces.

It was a transitional period for the Eagles, marking the arrival of guitarist Joe Walsh and the departure of original bassist and vocalist Randy Meisner.
