The story behind
Wake Up Alone, according to DoReSol
In Wake Up Alone, Amy Winehouse immerses us in the raw reality of loneliness. The lyrics describe how, despite staying busy during the day, the night brings an unavoidable sadness. It is in dreams where her absent loved one appears, allowing her to pour out all her affection and feeling. However, upon waking, the harsh truth of being alone reimposes itself. The song movingly conveys the anguish of missing the person you love, exploring themes such as guilt, grief, infidelity, heartbreak, and trauma within a relationship.
This track was born in the context of the album Back to Black, released in October 2006. Amy Winehouse drew much of this work from her complex relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, who had temporarily left her. This separation, though brief, was the impetus to create a record that explored these intense emotions. To capture the sound of 1960s female groups, Winehouse collaborated with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, also featuring the band The Dap-Kings, led by Sharon Jones. The album was recorded between 2005 and 2006. Wake Up Alone was produced by Mark Ronson, with arrangements by Gabriel Roth, and the mixing was handled by Tom Elmhirst and Matt Paul. The song has a duration of 3:42.
